His Excellency the President and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces Mahinda Rajapaksa celebrates his 69th birthday today (18th Nov). Meanwhile, anniversary of the second term in office of the President will also dawn tomorrow (19th Nov).

President Rajapaksa was born on November 18, 1945 as the second son of the late Hon. D. A. Rajapaksa in Weeraketiya in the Southern province. Following his father's footpath who was an eminent political leader and one time cabinet minister he entered politics as the youngest Member of Parliament at the age of 24 years representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party from the Beliatta electorate in 1970.

He was appointed as the Prime Minister in April 2004 before he was elected as the fifth Executive President by popular mandate on November 2005. He was again elected to a second term in office in a landslide victory.

Under his able leadership he steered Sri Lanka out of the separatist terrorist conflict that plagued the nation for three decades.
