President Mahinda Rajapaksa celebrates his birthday
His Excellency the President and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces Mahinda Rajapaksa celebrates his 69th birthday today (18th Nov). Meanwhile, anniversary of the second term in office of the President will also dawn tomorrow (19th Nov).

President Rajapaksa was born on November 18, 1945 as the second son of the late Hon. D. A. Rajapaksa in Weeraketiya in the Southern province. Following his father's footpath who was an eminent political leader and one time cabinet minister he entered politics as the youngest Member of Parliament at the age of 24 years representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party from the Beliatta electorate in 1970.

He was appointed as the Prime Minister in April 2004 before he was elected as the fifth Executive President by popular mandate on November 2005. He was again elected to a second term in office in a landslide victory.

Under his able leadership he steered Sri Lanka out of the separatist terrorist conflict that plagued the nation for three decades. Since the dawn of peace in May 2009 the country has seen a tremendous transformation from a country that was battered by civil strife to an emerging regional economic power. Under his leadership the country has seen an unprecedented development that has transformed the country into what it is today.

President Rajapaksa is the current Chairperson of the Commonwealth who has been assigned a wider role to play within the Commonwealth family of member states. He is the first Sri Lankan Head of State to hold the Chair.
Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews is now the No 1 all-rounder in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Rankings for One-Day International (ODI) All-rounders. Despite Sri Lanka losing the ODI series to India 0-5, Mathews was one of the success stories and performed brilliantly with the bat. In the last ODI at Ranchi, he smashed 139 not out and also took two wickets.

According to the latest rankings released by the ICC, Mathews has now finished with 420 rating points. In the process, he displaced Mohammad Hafeez, the Pakistan all-rounder, from the top spot. Hafeez currently has 411 rating points. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is on the third spot.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja is on the fourth spot followed by Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan on fifth.
