A MiG-27 fighter aircraft belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) crashed near Dummalasuriya in Kurunegala yesterday afternoon.
The aircraft which took off from Katunayake had crashed around 1.35 pm, SLAF media spokesman Group Captain Andrew Wijesuriya said. He attributed the mishap to a mechanical fault.
The pilot ejected from the ill-fated aircraft had landed safely, Wijesuriya said.
SLAF engineers have commenced investigations into the incident.
The Russian built jet was on a routine training mission, the Air Force spokesman said. |
